A Yorkshire MP has warned that many British Muslims are "under siege" and feel "like the Jews of Europe".
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik, who is a minister in the Department for International Development, made it clear he was not comparing the situation experienced by Muslims to the plight of Jews during the Holocaust.

However, he suggested that targeting Muslims led to them feeling under siege.

This had the negative effects of segregating society and undermining efforts to deal with extremism and terrorism, he added.

Mr Malik, who revealed he had been the victim of religious hatred himself on a number of occasions, made the comments in an interview for a Channel 4 Dispatches programme.

He said: "I think most people would agree that if you ask Muslims today what do they feel like, they feel like the Jews of Europe.

"I don't mean to equate that with the Holocaust but in the way that it was legitimate almost - and still is in some parts - to target Jews, many Muslims would say that we feel the exact same way.

"Somehow there's a message out there that it's OK to target people as long as it's Muslims. And you don't have to worry about the facts, and people will turn a blind eye."

The documentary - which investigates whether the fear of terrorism has fuelled the rise of violence, intolerance and hatred against British Muslims - will be broadcast on Monday to coincide with the third anniversary of the July 7 London bombings.

Mr Malik's constituency in West Yorkshire was home to July 7 suicide bomber Mohammad Siddique Khan.

We know that there are good and bad amongst all races but who are the current terrorists - unfortunately muslim. I also know that I would not want my child taught by a teacher in a burkha and I would not want my hair cut by a woman wearing a headscarf- these are recent cases. Do not forget this is England and not a muslim country - there are all races here and many of whom get on with other people.

I have no doubts that the most hyped about issues reported are on Muslim terrorists, but I would just like to inform the intelligent reader that what is portrayed is always one sided. You always get to read or hear about a suicide bomber taking so many peoples lives or how many soldiers have been killed in the Iraq War or in Afganistan. Do we really get the correct numbers of innocent deaths that are being carried out day after day on Muslims in Palestine, Iraq, Kashmir, etc. Its sad to accept that killings are being carried out everyday on innocent people mainly because of the faith they follow. With this note I would totally agree with MP Shahid Maliks comments it seems ok to target the Muslims especially since the abuse is being lead and carried out so openly by the world leaders

Hello shirley rose,

just thought I would let you know that Muslims are not a race. Islam is a faith like Chrisitanity for example. There are 40 million plus chinese Muslims, and there are Muslim people from far east Asia, white Muslims from Europe, Arab and black African Muslims, Arab and black Muslims from the middle east, Muslim people from the Indian sub continent..all sorts.

Also there is crime everywhere..in London the Met police just announced that knife crime was going to become their number focus above terrorism..so do we say all Londoners are knife wielding murderers? NO..also the majority of cases of pedophiles seem to come from the white community..so do we say all white people are pedophiles NO.

Also it is incorrect to say all terrorist are Muslim..in other parts of the world terrorism is being perpetrated by various races, Mugabe in Zimbabwe and most other African leaders on their people, Israelis on the middle east, Brits and Americans in the middle east ans Somalia, Tamil tigers in Sri Lanka, Farq in Columbia, and several other governments and groups whose actions result in people's lives being terrorised a lot more that ours are in the current climate. I suggest you stop winging get educated and just enjoy life while you are here hey..
