Michael Carrick has not given up on the play-offs this season, although it would take a few twists and turns for his side to finish in the top six. Currently sat ninth, Middlesbrough are six points adrift of sixth-placed Norwich City. Not only do the Canaries have a healthy lead, the two clubs separating Norwich and Middlesbrough have a game in hand on Carrick’s men. With a play-off finish potentially proving too tall an order, many fans will already be looking to next season. If Middlesbrough are to challenge for promotion next season, a summer of shrewd transfer dealings could be key. With that in mind, here is an early look at the favourites to join the club in the summer, courtesy of Readwrite. Luke Ayling - 1/3 Currently on loan at the Riverside, Ayling has made quite the impression since making the switch from Leeds United. His contract at Elland Road is up in the summer, therefore he looks set to be available as a free agent. Tyler Goodrham - 7/2 A tidy midfielder, the 20-year-old is among the most exciting prospects in League One. He has impressed for Oxford United this season and was rewarded for his progress with a long-term deal in January. Another year in the Championship could potentially prove beneficial. Alex Mowatt - 10/1 Formerly a Middlesbrough loanee, Mowatt is currently a regular fixture in the West Bromwich Albion midfield. An experienced head with bags of Championship experience, the 29-year-old would arguably be a shrewd addition for an array of clubs in the second tier. Aaron Connolly - 12/1 Another ex-Middlesbrough loanee, Connolly has been in and out of the Hull City side this season. Having only joined the Tigers on a one-year deal, it remains to be seen where his future lies. Tyrhys Dolan - 16/1 A skilful playmaker, Dolan could potentially attract interest in the summer, particularly if Blackburn Rovers fail to beat the drop in the Championship. Jannik Vestergaard - 20/1 A mainstay of the Leicester City backline, there is arguably not a Championship side Vestergaard would not bolster. He is a key figure for the Foxes now but they may wish to upgrade next season if they seal promotiom Che Adams - 20/1 The forward is out of contract at Southampton in the summer and has been linked with a move to Wolves. Dennis Praet - 33/1 Considering he has not been ever-present for Leicester City this season, it would not be surprising to see the midfielder seek pastures new in the summer.
