Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass happy to sit tight over contract talks

Josh Windass and Darren Moore are both relaxed about the lull in contract negotiations at Hillsborough as Sheffield Wednesday look to keep their focus on the pitch.

Such is the pace Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town are setting at the top of League One, the third-placed Owls must be consistent to keep up. They came unstuck at Lincoln City's Sincil Bank last season but return on Saturday looking better equipped to beat the division's less glamorous sides.

One of the reasons is Windass, a forward they refused to sell in the summer when there was interest from Argentina's top division despite his injury-ruined 2021-22.

But the son of Dean is in the last year of his contract – when asked about a rumoured option that is all he would say – and is happy just to focus on what lies in front of him.

"I've not really thought about it, I just want to get promoted," he says. "If the club comes to me it is what it is but at the minute I just want to play games because last year I missed a lot of football.

"I feel fit this season and I feel like I'm playing well so I just want to keep it going and get us promoted, then we'll see what happens.

"There's always going to be that in the background, I guess, but it's not really entered my mind."

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is the only player in active contract talks which seem to be moving leisurely, but manager Moore is equally unfazed.

"It is to keep the focus, mentality and drive," he explains. "I don't think we need to speak to people at this stage regarding contracts.

"I think you see a group that have a desire to remain at the club. If individuals and the group are doing well, that takes care of itself."

Wednesday feel better equipped to deal with the so-called “lesser” teams this season.

"I think we can go and spoil games and we've also got people who can run and play attractive football,” says Windass.

Dele-Bashiru and Dominic Iorfa are fit to face the Imps, and with George Byers, Mallik Wilks and Mark McGuinness back in training and Dennis Adeniran "a week or two" from ball work, the squad is looking in good shape.

The Owls’ FA Cup first-round tie at home to Morecambe will be played on Friday, November 4.
